Our Story.

Robert Alexander has always dreamed of owning a farm and in 2002 he established Windfall. The seed to make this dream come true came in a moment of spontaneity – he was having a drink with a friend and realized that owning his own wine farm would be an incredible experience.

He first saw the perfect balance of complexity, a prevailing nose, and smoothness – his definition of a great wine – when he tasted Château Neuf de Pape during a bike trip in Africa. “This wine arrived like a mirage in a desert. It was bliss and real.”

Robert tries to learn from many people in the industry, noting that the most important lesson he has learnt is that you can never rush wine.

In only 12 years, Robert Alexander went from producing one Sauvignon Blanc to making nine wines, a Method Cap Classique, and a potstill brandy.

It is hard work, humble beginnings, and a constant search for excellence that helped Robert achieve so much in such a short time. At Windfall, the aim is to keep the quality of the wines consistent, whilst improving wherever possible by keeping the interest of wine lovers in mind.

The vineyards are planted in red Karoo soils and limestone, with as little interference as possible. The goal is to make wines in which the characteristics of this terroir are tasted, embracing the philosophy that wine starts in the vineyards.
